Prescription-strength nutritional supplements are increasingly discussed in psychiatric practice.

Some patients ask about prescription products based on vitamins or nutraceuticals. Two that sometimes come up in psychiatry are Deplin and EnLyte, which are prescription-strength forms of B-vitamins, and two others, Vascepa and Lovaza, which are prescription omega-3 fatty acids. Here’s what you should know:

Deplin and EnLyte: Prescription L-Methylfolate for Depression

Both Deplin and EnLyte contain L-methylfolate, which is the active, bioavailable form of folate (vitamin B9). Folate is important for the brain because it helps make neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, which affect mood.

Deplin is a high-dose, single-ingredient product. It is often prescribed alongside antidepressants to try to support mood.

EnLyte also contains L-methylfolate, but it includes a mix of other vitamins and cofactors (like B12 and B6). According to the makers of EnLyte, a very high single dose of folate (like in Deplin) may stress the balance among the components of the brain’s complex chemistry, whereas EnLyte’s mixture of nutrients is designed to give a more “balanced boost.” If you want to explore this idea further, you can visit their website at enlyterx.com.

Vascepa and Lovaza: Prescription Omega-3 Fatty Acids for Mood and Heart Health

Both Vascepa and Lovaza are prescription-strength omega-3 fatty acid products. Omega-3 fatty acids are healthy fats that play an important role in brain health and mood regulation, as well as heart health. Research suggests that omega-3s, especially EPA, may help reduce symptoms of depression in some patients, in addition to their better known effects on heart protection. They appear to have anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects, which can support healthy brain function. Some studies show that adding omega-3s to antidepressant therapy may enhance treatment response.

Vascepa contains only purified EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), which seems to be the component most useful for both heart health and mood support.

Lovaza contains both EPA and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), and while DHA has its own health roles, it may not contribute as strongly to mood improvement.

These products are sometimes called “medical foods” (like Deplin and EnLyte) or prescription omega-3s (like Vascepa and Lovaza). They are not antidepressants on their own, but may be prescribed alongside other treatments as part of a broader plan for mental health and overall wellness. Ask your psychiatrist whether L-methylfolate, prescription omega-3s, or other evidence-based nutritional adjuncts might be right for your treatment plan.
